Paisley
Border Collie Search & Rescue Dog
From
Karen, his handler: I've been with the group for 4 years
and have been involved in the training of three wonderful search
dogs. I'm presently training Paisley and my Aussie, Summit, for
search and rescue work.
My boy, Paisley,
had a bit of a tough start in life and found himself living
in a home where he was not welcome. I scooped him up right away
when I found out he was in need of a new home. He was an emotional
and
physical wreck when he came home to live with me and my two other
dogs so I gave him a lil space and alot of love and he quickly
came around. He's still recovering from the fears instilled in him
when
he was a pup, but has blossomed since getting involved in search
and rescue work. He's a very quick study and only needs to be introduced
once to a new situation and he's able to retain the new information
and apply it under different circumstances. He just learned at
a recent search training that sometimes the subjects posing as victims
can be located up in trees. Now when he takes walks and reads the
dog blogs that other canines leave behind on tree trunks, when
he's
done reading the messages he slowly looks up each and every tree
trunk to make sure he's not leaving anyone behind. My wish for
him is that he can leave his past behind and move towards the future
fearlessly and by my side.
Disaster and Wilderness Ground Searchers (DAWGS)
is a volunteer search unit dedicated to the training of search
and rescue dogs, handlers and support personnel in order to provide
professional
and highly-skilled search and rescue teams in the event of emergency
response events. Formed in 1997 and operational in the spring
of 1998, their primary search area is the state of Connecticut, although
they are willing to assist disaster relief efforts and lost person
searches wherever they are needed.
